Richard Lee Stultz
©Richard Lee Stultz, a Project Liberty Ship volunteer from Union Bridge, Maryland, died September 27, 2010, at the age of 81. Richard sailed as a fireman/watertender and was one of the few crew members who made the entire three-months-plus Great Lakes voyage in 2000, including staying aboard while the ship was in drydock. During the ship's voyage north from Baltimore, he flew his personal American flag from its mast. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was employed for more than 40 years by the Lehigh Portland Cement Company as a carpenter, retiring in 1992. Active in Republican politics, he was mayor of Union Bridge from 1971 to 1975. He had also been a member of the town council and was a member of the West Carroll Republican Club, Union Bridge Volunteer Fire Co. and Post 8806 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. A lifelong Union Bridge resident, he was a member, Sunday school teacher and Sunday school superintendant at St. James Lutheran Church. He is survived by his wife, Yvonne, two daughters and a son, nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and two sisters.
